GREEN CAMPUS COMMITTEE:
The Green Campus Committee promotes environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices within the institution. It focuses on maintaining a clean, green, and pollution-free campus through initiatives like tree plantation, waste management, energy conservation, and awareness programs. The committee encourages students and staff to adopt sustainable habits and participate in environmental protection activities, contributing to a greener future.
The Green Campus Committee (Eco Club/Environmental Sustainability Cell) drives environmental stewardship and resource management on campus, governed by UGC Guidelines for Sustainable Campus Operations, Government of Maharashtra’s Department of Higher and Technical Education directives, Mumbai University’s IQAC/NAAC Quality Metrics, and NEP 2020‘s environmental education mandate. Its work spans plastic-free campus enforcement, statutory audits, waste management, and now mainstream curricular integration.
Rules & Regulations
1) Statutory composition — Chaired by the Principal/Vice-Principal, led by a Convener/Green Officer (preferably from Environmental Studies/Science background), with cross-stream faculty, NSS/DLLE coordinators, an Administrative/Estate Officer, and student Eco-Ambassadors.
2) Mandatory single-use plastic ban — Per Government of Maharashtra notifications and UGC mandates, plastic bags, straws, cups, and non-biodegradable packaging are strictly prohibited across classrooms, offices, and canteens, requiring reusable/biodegradable alternatives.
3) Three mandatory statutory audits — Colleges must conduct periodic Green Audit (flora/fauna, carbon sequestration), Energy Audit (power efficiency, renewable transition), and Environmental/Carbon Audit (footprint from transport, paper, waste) via certified external agencies.
4) Color-coded waste segregation — Mandatory separate bins (Green for biodegradable/wet, Blue for non-biodegradable/dry), with wet/canteen waste ideally processed via on-campus vermicomposting or organic waste converters.
5) E-waste handling under MPCB norms — Electronic waste must be stored separately (not dumped with regular garbage) and handed to authorized municipal e-waste recyclers under Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) regulations.
6) Mandatory rainwater harvesting — Facilities for capturing rooftop rainwater and recharging groundwater tables must be installed and kept operational.
7) Environmental Education as mandatory credit course — Under NEP 2020’s Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), Environmental Education is a compulsory AEC/VAC (Ability Enhancement/Value Added Course) for all UG students across streams, including experiential fieldwork like biodiversity mapping and clean-up drives.
8) NAAC Criterion 7 documentation requirements — The committee must maintain evidence across metrics 7.1.2 (energy conservation), 7.1.3 (waste management), 7.1.4 (water conservation), 7.1.5 (green campus initiatives), and 7.1.6 (quality audits) for accreditation.
